Common Scams to Avoid When First Enrolling in Medicare

Turning 65 and enrolling in Medicare for the first time is an important milestone. However, scammers often target individuals who are new to the program, attempting to take advantage of their unfamiliarity with the process. To protect yourself and your personal information, it is essential to recognize common Medicare scams and understand how to avoid them.

Phishing Scams

Scammers may pose as Medicare representatives and call or email individuals approaching their 65th birthday, asking for personal information such as Social Security numbers or bank details. Medicare will never contact you out of the blue to request sensitive data. If you receive such a request, hang up and report it to Medicare.

Fake Medicare Plans

Some fraudulent agents try to sell fake Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plans to new enrollees. If you are selecting coverage beyond Original Medicare, always verify a plan’s legitimacy by checking with Medicare’s official website or calling 1-800-MEDICARE.

Bogus Free Medical Equipment Offers

Scammers may contact new Medicare beneficiaries with offers of free medical supplies in exchange for Medicare details. Only accept medical equipment from legitimate suppliers, and always consult your doctor before providing any information.

Imposter Enrollment Assistants

Be wary of individuals who claim they can enroll you in Medicare for a fee. Medicare enrollment is always free, and official Medicare representatives will never ask for payment. If you need help understanding your options, work with a licensed insurance broker or visit the official Medicare website.

To stay safe, always protect your Medicare number, verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from Medicare, and report suspicious activity to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). Staying informed and cautious will help prevent fraud and keep your Medicare benefits secure.

For trusted guidance with your Medicare enrollment, reach out to one of our licensed insurance agents. Our assistance is always free, ensuring that you enroll with confidence and peace of mind.
